GOAL:

Help scientists better understand urban squirrel biology by counting squirrels.

Squirrels can be a bit nutty, but then again, maybe you are too! Keep track of your furry neighbors with Project Squirrel, a citizen science project with the goal of understanding urban squirrel biology. It includes everything from squirrels to migratory birds, nocturnal mammals, and secretive reptiles and amphibians. You simply count the creatures found in your backyard or neighborhood, and if possible, try to distinguish between two different types of tree squirrels: gray and fox. Anyone can participate in Project Squirrel, it’s an all ages, all locations (Canada too!) project designed for urbanites that need to reconnect with nature. If squirrels live in your neighborhood, you are encouraged to become a squirrel monitor. The project has another goal as well, which is to understand the effect that participation in citizen science has on participants. So, document your experience with Project Squirrel and contribute valuable data that will be used to recruit more citizen scientists.
