#CrowdCloudLIVE After each episode's WORLD premiere in April, show host, producer, and people seen on the show participated in post-premiere roundtable discussions. Viewers like you listened in, asked questions, and were able to dive deeper into the power of Citizen Science.

Watch the recorded Facebook Live events now. Discover more about how Citizen Science is revolutionizing the ways we gather, analyze, and utilize the data that fuels scientific research, discovery, and community action.

GOAL:

Collect scientific data on metals to assess metal content of pond and lake sediments.

Lead can be found in drinking water, but also in ponds and lakes! The Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network allows you to test your environment, no matter your age, through surveys, workshops, and online resources. For the metals survey, volunteers simply collect a sample of mud from their local pond and send it off to the OPAL Water Team at UCL. There, they measure for metals like lead and copper using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). A citizen science metals survey in the UK done by OPAL revealed “considerable amounts of metals”, including high levels of lead, likely left over from historical industrial development as well as the geology of the area. For now, the project only includes residents of the UK, so be sure to tell your friends and family who live there so they can participate. Stay tuned for new up and coming projects that test metals in water!
