GOAL:

Transcribe weather and ocean observations from old ship’s logs.

Computers have a hard time reading handwriting, so the Old Weather project from Zooniverse (huge citizen science web portal) needs your help exploring, marking, and transcribing historic ship’s logs from the 19th and 20th centuries. Mariners and scientists have recorded their weather and ocean observations over the past 150 years, leaving millions of records of data that need to be digitized so they can be shared freely. As information about the past becomes more available, a wider range of climate data can be calibrated and validated for better understanding of long term environmental phenomena. By participating you advance research in multiple fields, including past weather and sea-ice conditions for climate scientists, and invaluable information about voyage events for historians. You never know what you’ll discover!
