GOAL:

Help scientists monitor North America’s birds by monitoring their nests.

Bird nests can be found almost anywhere, in trees, shrubs, roofs, nest boxes, and more. If there’s one nearby that you’ve found, you can help scientists study bird biology and monitor populations of North America’s birds. (But be sure to leave chicks and birds undisturbed! No poking and prodding!) Presented once again by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, NestWatch is a citizen science project that needs volunteers to visit a nest once or twice a week. Your job will be to monitor the nest’s progression from incubating eggs to fuzzy chicks to fully fledged young. Then, you simply submit your data to NestWatch for them to compile and analyze it. This is an all ages project and welcomes people of all backgrounds, from bird lovers to expert bird watchers. The data gathered by NestWatch allows researchers to understand the impact that various threats have on breeding birds, such as environmental change and habitat destruction. With the knowledge volunteers help provide by watching a nest or two, researchers can inform decision makers on how best to conserve birds and their habitats.
