Provide authentic, hands-on coastal monitoring experiences.

LiMPETS (Long-term Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students) is a citizen science program for students, educators and volunteer groups. Volunteers are responsible for monitoring the ecosystems of California’s national marine sanctuaries, and that amounts to over 600 miles of coastline! By raising awareness and being good stewards of these special environments, LiMPETS is encouraging a new generation of engaged ocean stewards, and is already over 6,000 citizens strong. These volunteers are the eyes and ears of coastal shores, and usually detect changes and problems before any other organization. Through annual monitoring, LiMPETS have helped establish a baseline of key indicator species for California Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
