GOAL:

To identify where pollinators are declining and improve their habitat.

Some bee populations have experienced severe declines that may affect food production. There are many ways to help improve the populations of bees and other pollinators, starting with flowers, of course! The Great Sunflower Project has three programs for you to be involved in, and you get to choose what works best for you. The “Safe Gardens for Pollinators” program examines the effects of pesticides on pollinators by using data collected on Lemon Queen sunflowers. You can also participate in identifying key plants to support healthy pollinator communities through the “Pollinator Friendly Plants” program. Finally, the “Great Pollinator Habitat Challenge” allows citizen scientists to evaluate and improve gardens, parks and other green spaces that pollinators depend on. You can also simply observe your favorite plant (one you identify) for five minutes and record all the pollinators which visit. Upload your data online, and be part of a nation-wide effort!
