GOAL:

Monitor frog and toad populations by reporting their calls.

Frogs and toads are excellent indicator species of environmental health, and play an important role in the food chain, serving as both prey and predator. Unfortunately, many populations of these important amphibians have been in decline in the US, despite previously being abundant. Volunteers of FrogWatch USA are helping scientists understand the scope, geographic scale, and cause of these declines that are happening worldwide. The project is an initiative of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which aims to connect people with nature and provide a platform for contributing to conservation efforts. Participants are trained to listen for frogs and toads in the evenings, from February through to August, and to submit their observations online into a national database. FrogWatch USA is a great activity for the whole family, or for anyone looking to spend some time alone, simply listening to the natural world around them.
