GOAL:

Detect fish species from photos using a smartphone app.

It’s estimated that 90% of the world’s fisheries are being exploited, leading to a decline in fish stocks. This is a very big deal for countries like Indonesia, where 40% of their population lives on fish. The Nature Conservancy’s Indonesia Fisheries program is working with facial recognition technology for fish, called “FishFace.” It addresses one of the key challenges in managing overfishing; (overfishing seems to be one word) there simply aren’t enough data on how many fish still exist. They’re still working on expanding the project, but their goal is to deploy the FishFace app all over the world, detecting species from photos, which is much faster than sorting through fish at a processing plant.
