GOAL:

Crowdsource to help advance antimalarial research.

Malaria is a prevalent but treatable disease in many developing countries, that infects 216 million people annually and kills 650,000 each year. Plasmodium falciparum is the parasite responsible for malaria and it continuously evolves resistance to the medication that’s already available. There’s an urgent need to discover new drug treatment options that target proteins in the parasite that haven’t been found yet. FightMalaria@Home is a crowdsourcing project aimed at finding these proteins by harnessing the donated computational power of thousands of the world’s personal computers. Using a BOINC server, researchers will be able to harness the unused CPU power of your computer to create a supercomputer capable of running thousands of potential protein structures. The answer to a new malaria treatment is perhaps in one or more of these protein structures!
