Community Snow Observations

GOAL:

Volunteers measure snow depth in the mountains.

Are you a mountain adventurer? Mountainous regions collect enormous amounts of snow every year. Some of this snow accumulates to form glaciers. The rest of it melts and flows into rivers, lakes and the ocean. Measuring alpine snow depth helps researchers predict river flow, potential for flooding and impacts on fisheries. NASA Citizen Science’s Community Snow Observations (NASACSO) project needs your help to measure snow depths in mountain regions, in places where researchers can’t possibly cover the ground alone. Every one of your snow observations will help to predict snow conditions and improve snow safety in the mountains. Join NASACSO as they partner with teams of citizen scientists to improve understanding of snow distribution. Become a NASA Citizen Scientist through tutorials, and collect snow depth observations on your smartphone when you’re out exploring the mountains!
