Jose joined the Tropical Audubon Society shortly after moving to Miami in 1987, joined the Board of Directors in 1992, and became President in 2002. Born in Spain, Jose’s family escaped the revolution in Cuba to eventually immigrate to the United States and settle in Jacksonville, Florida. Growing up on the North Florida beaches and along the St. Johns River, Jose came to appreciate Florida’s natural environment. He attended the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, then went on to obtain a degree in Dentistry from Emory University. Since joining the Tropical Audubon Society, Jose has led bird and plant walks locally and internationally, and has represented the organization at numerous events. During his tenure as its President, TAS has been instrumental in defeating plans for the airport at the Homestead Air Reserve Base, protecting Biscayne Bay, holding the Urban Development Line, and supporting the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).
