Invasive Mosquito Project

GOAL:

Monitor mosquitoes and teach about mosquito-borne disease.

Mosquitoes pose a serious risk to public health, and are responsible for the transmission of pathogens like the Zika virus, malaria, West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis, dengue fever, and chikungunya. The Invasive Mosquito Project aims both to protect and educate participants through firsthand experience in gathering and recording scientific data on mosquitoes. With this public education tool and national mosquito monitoring program, the USDA partners professionals, teachers, and community educators to teach about mosquito borne diseases. Community members are asked to collect data that is used to generate mosquito species distribution maps for each year and cumulative distributions for each species. By doing this monitoring, researchers can define at-risk human and animal populations based on this distribution, allowing you to protect yourself and your family.
