GOAL:

Monitor air quality at ‘street level’ to create an online map of pollution.

Volunteers for INHALE (Initiative for Healthy Air & Local Economies) are Community Air Trackers, monitoring airborne particulates in their community. The project aims to measure air quality at “street level”, attaching sensors to backpacks, bike handlebars or baby stroller handles. INHALE volunteers walk run, or ride through their neighbourhoods collecting air particulate pollution data. Their data is uploaded onto a map of their community, which helps build an air quality data base called the Fresh Air Finder. People can use this tool to identify good and poor areas of air quality, identifying hot spots for pollution. This way, quantitative data collected by citizen scientists can spark conversation about neighborhood level solutions for cleaner air. INHALE is the first project of its kind in Canada, and if you are interested, you could be part of its expansion into America!
