Ma Jun & the IPE
BIO

Ma Jun, currently Director of the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE), has worked as an investigative journalist, non-fiction writer, environmental consultant, and has become a leading and well-respected environmentalist in China. TIME Magazine named him one of 100 Most Influential Persons in the world in 2006. Ma received the Goldman Environmental Award in 2012 and a Skoll Social Entrepreneurship award in 2014. His book, “China's Water Crisis” was the nation’s first major book on the subject of its environmental crisis. IPE developed the first Chinese publicly-accessible database of water pollution, which is one of the most serious environmental issue facing China, according to Ma. In order to protect water sources, he believes public participation must be encouraged alongside of strengthened law enforcement so that pollution is no longer protected by corrupt local officials. IPE’s current work includes the innovative Blue Map app which, with its “Black and Smelly Rivers” component, is one of the only mobile applications to combine government-mandated emissions data with citizen-generated images and text reports of pollution events.
