David Van Sickle

As Co-Founder and CEO of Propeller Health, David works to lower the costs of care through developing tools that improve asthma management. He received his PhD in Medical Anthropology from the University of Arizona, and carried out research for his dissertation examining the rising prevalence of asthma in India. After that, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He has also been an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, assigned to the Air Pollution and Respiratory Health Branch. During this time he provided epidemiological support to the National Asthma Control Program, and investigated the health effects of a variety of environmental exposures. The device developed by Propeller Health is a small sensor that attaches to a patient's existing medications, tracking when he or she uses their inhaler. David is eager to see broader participation where citizens start to participate more, not only in clinical trials, but also in public health. He and his colleagues are committed to seeing that medical data get put to work against long standing and frustrating conditions, such as asthma and other respiratory diseases.
